Multi-tenant or single-tenant source code — which one should I buy?
Buy multi-tenant source code if you intend to sign up more than one paying customer and each needs their own isolated data. Buy single-tenant if the software runs one business — yours — with no resale involved. The two are architecturally different, not a checkbox in settings, and buying the wrong one is the most expensive licensing mistake in this category because the fix is a rewrite, not a configuration change.

The numbers
1 database, many tenants
What multi-tenant means
Every customer's data is logically isolated inside a shared system.
1 business, 1 install
What single-tenant means
The software has no concept of "other customers" at all.
Rewrite, not a setting
The cost of buying wrong
Retrofitting tenancy touches nearly every table and query.
The test that actually separates them
Register twice in the live demo, as two different "companies," and try to see the first account\'s data from the second one. If a genuine multi-tenant build isolates them correctly, that is the whole test. If the product has no concept of a second company at all, it is single-tenant, no matter what the sales page calls it.
| Multi-tenant | Single-tenant | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | You sell access to many separate businesses (a SaaS you resell) | One business — yours — uses it internally |
| Data isolation | Built into the schema: a tenant_id or per-schema separation on every table | Not present; there is no concept of "another company" in the data model |
| Onboarding a new customer | Self-serve signup creates an isolated workspace in seconds | Not applicable — there is only one workspace, yours |
| Typical buyer | An entrepreneur launching their own branded SaaS | A company automating its own operations |
Why "we can add multi-tenancy later" is usually false
- Tenancy touches almost every query in the codebase. Every table that stores customer data needs a tenant identifier, and every query that reads it needs a matching filter. Retrofitting this after launch means auditing the entire schema, not adding one column.
- A single missed filter is a data breach, not a bug. One query that forgets the tenant filter shows Company A\'s data to Company B. This is why genuine multi-tenant platforms are designed around isolation from the first line of code, not patched in.
- The commercial layer is separate work on top. Even a technically tenant-isolated system still needs per-tenant billing, plan limits and admin tooling to actually operate as a sellable SaaS — none of which exists in a single-tenant build.
If there is any chance you will want to sell access to more than one customer within the product\'s lifetime, buy multi-tenant from day one. The price difference is small; the rewrite cost of switching later is not.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run a multi-tenant product for just my own business, with one tenant?
Yes — multi-tenant architecture works fine with a single tenant in use; you simply never expose signup to outside customers. It costs nothing to keep that door closed, and everything to open it later if you bought single-tenant.
Is multi-tenant more expensive to license?
Sometimes, and sometimes it is priced the same with SaaS/resale rights sold as a separate add-on — see how licence tiers are actually structured in <a href="/answers/is-it-legal-to-resell-software-built-from-purchased-source-code/">reselling software built from purchased source code</a>. Confirm the price includes the resale right, not just the tenancy architecture.
Does multi-tenant mean slower performance for a single business?
Not meaningfully at normal scale — the isolation is a data-model concern, not a performance one. A well-built multi-tenant system with one active tenant performs the same as a single-tenant equivalent.
How do I verify isolation actually works, not just that a "tenant" field exists?
Create two test accounts in the live demo and try to access one tenant's records — invoices, customer lists, uploaded files — while logged in as the other. If anything leaks across, treat the isolation as unverified regardless of what the sales page claims.
